Hello, readers! Welcome back to our weekend guide, where we share our favorite activities in and around Atlanta this weekend and point out where you can get free stuff along the way.
Atlanta Streets Alive
Downtown/Old Fourth Ward. Sunday, 1-6pm. Free.
Main roads in Downtown Atlanta will be closed to traffic to allow pedestrians to enjoy free health and community-oriented events, including street food samples, belly dancing, a camping demonstration, and all-you-can-eat pasta. Observe the fun or take part in the action: Dance groups, restaurants, and boot camps will likely serve up a variety of promo products to publicize their organizations.
World’s Largest Baby Shower
Georgia World Congress Center, Saturday & Sunday, $9.00 + $1.22 fee.
New Moms & expecting mothers delight — cake and bakery treats await at Peekaboo Events‘ World’s Largest Baby Shower. The first 50 guests receive a “swag bag” with $200 worth of products courtesy of sponsor The Bump. Also expect raffles, gift bags and other surprises. Dads, have no fear; escape the oohs & awws for a little male bonding in the Dads’ Lounge.

Yaarab Shrine Center. Saturday, 5pm. $15.
Dress up like your favorite team, tailgate beforehand in the parking lot, and BYOB when you purchase a plastic cup for $3. Join in the cheers by shouting the names of your favorite players: Switchblade Siouxsie, Regreta Garbo or Ameilia Scareheart. Then check out the merch — tees, stickers and posters — to show your support.
AKA Blondie Benefit
Eyedrum. Friday, 8pm. $10.
Hear Predator, The Luchagors and Dead Rabbits; win raffles and prizes; and stay tuned for a special appearance by Blondie herself — the infamous 53-year-old Clermont Lounge icon. If you don’t know what we’re talking about, ask your parents. Proceeds go towards the documentary-in-progress AKA Blondie, “an intimate view of the most famous exotic dancer in the Southeastern U.S.”
Tommy Wiseau Presents The Room
Plaza Theater. Friday & Saturday, 8:30. $15.
The first time I saw The Room at the Plaza Theater I didn’t know anything about it. And that’s the best way to see it. Go find out why people throw spoons at the screen, dress up as characters, and recite memorable lines like, “You’re tearing me apart, Lisa!” Best of all, Tommy Wiseau, the auteur behind this cinematic tour de force and the long-haired man in this picture, presents The Room in person this Friday and Saturday, with a meet-and-greet at 8:30, Q&A at 9:30 and film screening at 10.
Sandy Springs Family Fun Day
Slappey & Sadd Parking Lot & Cromwell Square Parking Lot, Sandy Springs. Saturday, 11-5. Free.
Enjoy live music, facepainting, a rock climbing wall, and Slope’s Barbeque while raising money for the Sandy Springs Police Beneveloent Fund. Kids can mingle with cops and pose for pictures in Sandy Springs police cars. Corporate sponsors Wachovia and Slappey & Sadd, LLC, among others, may have some free goodies for you and your family. And hey, maybe a few lucky children will walk away with promotional police badges.
East Atlanta Beer Fest
EAV’s Brownwood Park. Saturday, 1-6pm. Sold out.
We were going to tell you to hit up the East Atlanta Beer Fest, but tickets have sold out. If you managed to snag yours in time, don’t miss Judi Chicago at 2:20 pm — possibly Atlanta’s best live act. See them Saturday before they get too big.
