Smithsonian Fans Illuminate History’s Hardcore Side with Promotional Items

Posted on March 21st, 2011

When consumers begin to associate a brand with old age or the past, it might be time to rebrand – which companies have successfully done through strategically contemporary marketing campaigns (such as Old Spice’s social media campaign, which garnered over 23 million YouTube views in just 36 hours). Whether online videos or promotional items are the vehicle by which rebranding is achieved is irrelevant; what’s important is that it is possible, so executives don’t need to start applying for jobs as soon as surveys show that a brand has an antiquated connotation.

In an attempt to show off the cooler side of the Smithsonian Institute, a team of artists recently launched a campaign to illuminate some “Historically Hardcore” heroes, including Theodore Roosevelt, Andrew Jackson, and Genghis Khan. Through a series of promotional items and posters, the artists attempt to appeal to a younger demographic’s interests by illustrating some of the biggest and baddest moments and figures in world history.

On March 11, a massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake hit the Pacific Ocean near the coast of Honshu, Japan, resulting in a subsequent tsunami and overall tremendous damage to this northeast area of the country. With the country still in crisis – trying to stabilize a reactor in a nuclear plant rocked by the quake and searching for thousands missing, all in the midst of powerful aftershocks continuing to hit the region – many around the world are trying to help those affected by this disaster in any way they can – including by purchasing promotional products.

Coca-Cola Happiness Truck Spreads Joy with Promotional Products

Posted on March 1st, 2011

Welcome to this week’s edition of “Trending Topic Tuesday,” where we share our take on what’s going on in the world and what promotional products would appropriately (or inappropriately) market the subject matter.

As part of its ongoing “Open Happiness” campaign, Coca-Cola recently sent a “Happiness Truck” to the streets of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to make people smile. The truck is a bigger and better version of the Happiness Machine Coke planted on the campus of a London university last year (sparking a viral video): at the push of a button, it dispenses an ice-cold bottle of Coca-Cola Classic or Coca-Cola branded promotional products – visitors to the Happiness Truck received everything from Frisbees to surfboards to beach balls and balloons.

Judging by the smiles radiating from the faces of the crowd, I’d say the Happiness Truck accomplished its purpose in Rio de Janeiro, and the people who were visited by the fun-inducing vehicle will be able to remember that day every time they pick up the promotional products they pulled from the slot.

Good-bye Books…Hello Electronic Promotional Items

Posted on February 16th, 2011

Today Borders Group announced it was filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.  Borders president, Mike Edwards said the current environment of curtailed customer spending, the lack of competitive capital resources, and other business negotiations has caused the group to go under.

As electronic promotional items like e-readers, MP3 players, and other media gadgets become the preferred medium, companies like Borders are struggling.

However, in an article by Barron’s columnist Tiernan Ray, Ray wrote mega bookseller Barnes & Noble is expected to have a positive EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, deductions, and amortization) of $104 million in 2013.

One of the reasons why companies such as Barnes and Noble, have been able to stay competitive is by creating and selling their own electronic promotional items. Ray adds, Barnes and Noble is expected to sell 2.35 million Nook units this year.

One of my personal favorite unique promotional products solutions is the cable drop.  A large stress in my life evolves from my struggle to reach the cord to my iPhone charger (that falls behind my dresser every day ). Posted on February 9th, 2011

Many people complain that Valentine’s Day is a holiday created by greeting card and chocolate companies to boost sales in their respective industries, but it’s much more than that – it’s a chance to show those who matter to you how much you care about them in the most cutesy, cheesy, sparkly, over-the-top way you can think of. I encourage you to accomplish this daunting task with the aid of promotional gifts.
