Contest Challenges Artists to Create Custom T Shirts featuring “The Muppets”

Welcome to this week’s edition of “Trending Topic Tuesday,” where we share our take on what’s going on in the world and what promotional products would appropriately (or inappropriately) market the subject matter.

Threadless and Disney just announced a contest searching for friendship-themed designs to decorate custom t shirts promoting this November’s brand-new full-length movie, “The Muppets.” Users must submit original designs featuring Muppets characters, which the public will then vote on to decide a winner.

The contest ends June 20th, and the winning design will be chosen on June 27th. One lucky winner will receive $2500 cash, a $250 Threadless gift certificate, the winning custom t shirt signed by The Muppets and framed next to a signed photo of the Muppets, a $250 set of collectible statues from Disney Traditions, and an autographed copy of the upcoming album, “MUPPETS: The Green Album”.

Not so confident in your artistic abilities? There are plenty of other ways to inspire the design of custom t shirts, whether you simply vote on your favorite, host your own t-shirt design competition, or solicit the help of professional artists, like those on staff at Pinnacle!

The Urban Outfitters NPR Custom T-Shirt: A Story of Irony

NPR T-ShirtThe retail brand Urban Outfitters, popular among representatives of the so-called “hipster” culture for its sometimes satirical merchandise, including graphic T-shirts such as one printed with the classic American Uncle Sam portrait and “I Want You” propaganda message with the addition of “To Buy Me a Drink,” has a new custom T-shirt in its catalog displaying a different sort of mockery.

Currently, UO is selling a custom T-shirt printed with the logo of National Public Radio, the media organization that made headlines just last month when a GOP-backed measure to defund NPR passed in the House. (By the way, NPR does not currently receive any direct federal funding; 2% of its revenue comes from grants from federally funded agencies like the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the Department of Education; the largest share of its revenue comes from member stations, who in turn have about 10% of their revenue from the CPB and another 6% from the local, state and federal government.)

Custom T-Shirts for “The Situation”

http://thesituationshirt.com/

On my way to work this morning, a local radio station was discussing how reality star Mike “The Situation” of MTV’s Jersey Shore has one of the highest grossing phone apps ever with GTL locations and a “Grenade Dodger” game. “The Situation” already has several other businesses in the works and he also, supposedly, has a t-shirt coming out that will have a hole in the belly so you can show off your “abs”. You may not initially think of that product being custom t-shirts, but it definitely is, it promotes the brand that he is making for himself and MTV indirectly for introducing him to the world. So if someone like “The Situation” can make himself famous with custom t-shirts, think of what it can do for your business.

King of Pops Secrets to Success: Tasty Treats, Custom T Shirts and Twitter

In a world of Ben and Jerry’s, Coldstone Creamery, and more frozen yogurt shops than I could possibly count on one hand, what does it take to successfully sell frozen treats? Well, just take a look at Steven Carse, who is better known as Atlanta’s own “King of Pops.”  Using fresh, local ingredients to create unique flavors such as Grapefruit Mint, Green Apple Lemonade, Mexican Chocolate and my personal favorite, Valencia Orange Basil, Carse has become a local legend. Other startups can take note from the King, who has an avid presence on Twitter, where he shares daily flavors with more than 2500 followers. He also promotes his handcrafted pops with custom t shirts that local readers can purchase when they visit his promotional cooler (see pictures below) at the corner of North Ave. and N. Highland.
