Every year on February 2, a small, furry rodent takes on the task typically fulfilled by local weathermen and women. According to folklore surrounding Groundhog Day, if a groundhog emerges from its burrow and is met with sunshine, it will see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow, indicating that wintry weather will continue for another six weeks. If the groundhog finds cloudy skies and no shadow in sight, it will leave the burrow, which means the winter weather and winds will soon end.
As the eyes of America gravitate towards legendary Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania, in addition to local groundhogs closer to home, think about the media attention that your brand could obtain by capitalizing on Groundhog Day marketing opportunities!
With so much pressure riding on the shoulders of the groundhog on its big day, I would like to suggest a few promotional items that could help make the four-legged creature (or even his adoring fans!) a little more comfortable.
1. Neon sunglasses
Why, practical neon plastic sunglasses, of course! The bright color would ensure that your local groundhog and/or crowds of people gathered around his burrow are right on trend, and don’t you agree that the groundhog should look like the celebrity that he is on his big debut? Also, its eyes will need time to adjust to daylight, regardless of sunshine or clouds in the sky.
2. Fitness accessories
I have to admit I’m no expert on groundhogs, but judging by the fact that they hole up underground for 3+ months, it seems like a fair assumption to say they’re a little bit out of shape. They put on excess weight prior to hibernation to stay warm and nourished, but once they venture out from their burrows, they must quickly regain their strength to fend off predators. If our groundhog allies determine that another six weeks of winter are on the agenda, they may still appreciate an opportunity to stretch their stubby legs before disappearing once more into the depths of the earth.
3. Weather instruments
According to the National Climactic Data Center, groundhogs’ overall prediction accuracy rate on Groundhog Day hovers around 39%… unreliable, at best. While the hype and excitement surrounding Groundhog Day makes for a fun tradition, perhaps it is time for society to start taking the groundhogs’ predictions with a grain of salt and turn our attention to more accurate sources for our winter weather forecasts!
