Custom Athleisure Apparel Items Activate Your Brand

Custom Athleisure Apparel Items Activate Your Brand

Merriam-Webster defines Athleisure as “casual clothing – like yoga pants, sweat pants and hoodies – that are designed to be worn for both exercising and for doing (almost) everything else,” and they’ve flagged athleisure as a word to watch, and for good reason! With the original trend dating back to as early as the 1970’s, it wasn’t until the early 2000’s that it started to stick, and wasn’t until 2016 it really took off. Athleisure wear is comfortable, functional, and here to stay.

Nearly every popular brand has some sort of athleisure or activewear line, and many major retailers include “athleisure” or “activewear” as a category to sort by for online shopping (think Target, Nordstroms, Macy’s, Dillards, etc,). Classic sporting goods brands such as Adidas, Nike and Under Armour are coming out with new retail items every day, and there are a ton of companies that only sell athleisure wear – i.e. lululemon, Fabletics, Athleta, Lucy, etc.

With the increase in popularity of this trend, it’s only natural that companies will want to put their logo on athleisure items. After all, this trend is an acceptable style choice for almost all situations, so organizations from all industries are taking this opportunity to put their logo on athleisure wear and get their brand maximum exposure. Let me explain:

Whether I’m working out, running errands, doing house chores, grabbing dinner with friends, or even getting ready for work, I can grab something in my closet that is appropriate for the occasion and falls into the athleisure category.

THE EVERYDAY COMFY TEE

Custom Athleisure Drapey tee from pinnacleIf I’m going to hit the gym, I tend to go for comfortable athletic leggings paired with a flowy, breathable tank top or t-shirt such as the Ladies Drapey Cross-Back Tee. A great men’s alternative would be the District Made Mens Tri-Blend Pocket Tee – something comfortable, breathable and on trend. The best part about these tops are when they’re not being worn to the gym, they can be matched with a nice pair of jeans and it immediately creates a whole different outfit for a casual dinner with friends, just like that! They’re versatile, comfortable, and best of all, expose your brand in a subtle and trendy way. These make great Spring/Summer customer appreciation gifts, outdoor event giveaways, and a unique Casual Friday piece for your employees.

THE VERSATILE LAYERING PIECE

Custom Ogio jacket - athleisure form Pinnacle PromotionsAnother great athleisure staple is the perfect hoodie, pullover or zip-up. There are so many different styles for this category, but they all serve the purpose of layering up. From thick, comfy fleece hoodies, to light and breathable pullovers, to quarter zips with thumb holes, or full zips with a slouchy hood – they can all be layered and worn with almost everything, everywhere from the gym to the office to the grocery store. The Ogio Endurance Origin Jacket is a great piece that is my go-to in my closet, and resembles something you’d find in lululemon, but at a fraction of the cost. It comes in both a men’s and women’s style and is sure to get a lot of wear by the end user. Give these out as high-value holiday gifts or sales awards to make a great impression. We got these a few years ago at Pinnacle and I still wear mine all Fall and Spring!

TWIST ON A CLASSIC

Custom Nike polo - athleisure from Pinnacle PromotionsPolos are classic promotional apparel items, but the athleisure trend has caused athletic polos to really take off. Moisture wicking and performance style polos (and t-shirts!) are more and more popular among businesses and organizations. They still provide the same professional polo look, but in a more comfortable material that is durable and trendy. One of the most popular performance style polos is the Nike Golf Dri-FIT Crosshatch Polo. With a ladies’ companion, this shirt easily transitions from the office to the golf course or tennis court.

Athleisure apparel items make great marketing vehicles for many reasons:

  • trendy – often, companies like to stay in style, and their promotional gifts and giveaways reflect that.
  • versatile – athleisure apparel is useful for many occasions, so companies feel good about giving pieces to their employees and customers
  • accessible – varying price points, from budget-friendly to high-quality name brands.

If you’re looking for well known brands such as Nike, Under Armour, or Adidas, we can source multiple styles from these brands, and we are able to decorate them with your logo. These names come at a higher price point, but they are perfect for those who want to get in on the athleisure trend with the higher perceived value and the well-known brand name. For value-driven organizations with a smaller budget, there are plenty of brands that offer comparable pieces and styles at a fraction of the cost. Ogio, Sport-Tek, and Next Level are becoming more and more popular and well known brand names. They offer the same, if not more, options at different price points and in all kinds of styles.

When considering apparel as a promotional item, you want to spend your money on something functional that will give your logo and brand the most exposure, whether it’s for your employees or for your customers. Because athleisure items can be worn in multiple settings and occasions and aren’t pigeonholed into one particular wardrobe box, you’re sure to get the most bang for your buck when branding these pieces. Trending Now: Promotional Products for an Unforgettable Summer

Licking sweet popsicles, going for a dip in the swimming pool, lazing in a hammock. Many consider these just a few of the ingredients for a perfect summer – us included.

What you may not know about the summertime months, however, is that a little creative marketing can help you incorporate your brand into the summer mix.

Customers tend to have a soft spot for brands that reward them for their support, and at the same time, show some personality. Custom products are a unique means to do precisely that.

With all of these unique features that already impress customers, the only thing that you could do to make it even better is to remind them who is making it all possible – your brand! Fall Trends: Metallic and Leather

Though it may take a little longer, what’s hot in retail always makes it over into the promotional products world.  And why wouldn’t it?  People want what’s in style, and if you provide something that’s trendy and has your logo on it, it’s a win-win for the customer and for the brand.

We recently attended the GAPPP (Georgia Association of Promotional Product Professionals) expo here in Atlanta and were not surprised to see lots of new products that fell right in line with retail trends.  We saw a lot of two trends that are super hot in fashion right now: metallics and leather.

Tons of fashion magazines from Elle to Glamour are calling metallic the it look for summer and fall.

Metallic Trend

Metallic Trend 2

The Huffington Post calls leather one of the top fall fashion trends of 2013 and it was very well represented (along with faux leather) at the GAPPP Expo as well.

Leather Backpack

Leather pouch

Leather wristlet

One of the most tricky things about finding the perfect promotional product is figuring out what product your customers will want to keep (and see your logo each time they use) and at the same time, what products align with your brand’s message.  If you want to communicate an up-to-date, fashion-forward message, take note from what’s going on in retail. No doubt there’s a version that is customizable with your logo.

Trending Now: Trend #6 American Classic

This is the last post in our trend series. This year we are seeing a lot of products with a clean, polished, All American feeling. Think about yachting, being outdoors in the springtime, crisp clean fabrics, stripes, aviator sunglasses and easy styling. Primary colors come to mind- especially navy, red, yellow and kelly green. Don’t forget your natural tones like khaki and stone.
American classic will be a popular trend because your customers will be familiar with the styling of the product. And their brand will be quietly associated with clean, classic products that have a sense of familiarity to the end user. Tote bags, sunglasses, drinkware, cooler bags, button downs, and backpacks fall within this trend.
Here are some of my favorite American Classic products:

The Classic Rugby shirt:

Aviator Custom Sunglasses:

Port and Company All American Tee:

Game Day Cup:

Alternative Apparel Slouchy Pullover:

Trending Now: Trend #5 Mobile Tech

Mobile devices from smartphones to tablets are becoming hugely popular and are taking a slice of the pie in terms of total web traffic.  KISSmetric put together a great infographic on how Mobile Devices are Changing Business.   Interesting to note that mobile (phone & tablet) accounted for about 20% of the total web traffic in the US in 2012 and mobile is projected to surpass desktops as the most commonly used device to access the web worldwide in 2013.

This is a trend you can’t ignore and luckily we have plenty of products that are designed to enhance our fast-paced mobile lifestyle.  Our Mobile Tech products feature the newest technology and cutting edge gadgets from tablet cases and re-charging devices to cell phone accessories like microfiber cloths and earbuds.  Don’t let that word “technology” make you think that everything is expensive… there are plenty of inexpensive promotional products that will allow you to dip into this trend without exceeding your budget.  Here are some of my favorites:

Stylus with Cleaning Cloth features a sleek barrel that pulls apart to reveal a hidden screen cleaner.  Earphone jack keeps your stylus attached and ready to work.  Great mobile tech item under $2!

The Xoopar Robo Powerbank is a clever robot with adjustable legs and arms that powers your mobile devices.  This was designed to cater to proud tech geeks… believe me, this is a huge market!  Imagine the delight when they receive this cool gadget.

The Microbuff Mini is a cute microfiber cloth that features repositionable Sticky Pad Technology® that allows you to grip it tightly to back of most gadgets without leaving a sticky residue.  Remove from the back of your phone, clean your screen and replace.  Another great inexpensive mobile tech product as low as $0.98.

Brookstone® Leather iPad Stand with Sleeve allows you to easily and comfortably view your iPad while on the go.  Sleeve secures tablet to your hand or arm for easy viewing… talk about enhancing your mobile experience! It also folds into a multi-angle stand for ultimate viewing.

Do the majority of your clients have smartphones and tablets?  These accessories may be the perfect branding opportunity.  Check out more great Mobile Tech products on our pinboard or on our website.

Trending Now: Trend #4 American Utility

One of the most practical trends I am seeing in the promotional products market is “American Utility.” My definition of American Utility is a product that is stylish, yet functional. The item can have a rustic or rugged feel to it. Heavier weighted fabrics, like canvas are prevalent, and are used to make backpacks, uniforms, and outdoor gear. Hardware is a major element to this trend; tool kits, knives, flashlights and various accessories are big on functionality. Key colors include khaki, grey, black, olive green, navy and orange. Camouflage and denim are also important.

On a marketing note, who would not want to give a product that isn’t functional? Chances are the end user will think of you every time they reach for that multi-tool or Chillin Can Camo dispenser!
Here are some of my favorite American Utility discoveries.

Heritage Supply Duffel Bag– Check out the buffalo plaid lining!

Men’s and Ladies Straight Collar Chambray Shirts. Love the darker wash!

Fred & Friends i Pound Stylus– SO hilarious, but useful!

Alternative Apparel Eco Jersey Hoodie in Camo/True Orange- So hip!

Guzzy 22 oz. Filtered Water Bottle– A filtering system that reduces bacteria, heavy metals, parasites and more!

Trending Now: Trend #3 Urban Gear

If you frequent your local coffee shop or take a look around when you are waiting for the train, you’ll see the next big trend that we’re seeing… “Urban Gear”.  With our dependence on a life in motion, we now have access to apparel and products that keep our gear (smartphone, tablet, mp3, headphones, etc) safe and stylish.

It seems I can’t sit through a stop light without checking my phone or fiddling with my music selection.  I guess you could say I’m pretty connected at all times!  I love finding products with practical, smart design that support my tech habits.  If your target audience is anything like me, you’ll need to check out some of my favorite Urban Gear products:

The Men’s Sherpa Fleece Lined Seam-Sealed Jacket is waterproof and features a audio port and convenient breast pocket for your phone or mp3. Available in a female companion as well.

The Impact Vertical Computer Messenger Bag comes in gray or black and features a padded exterior pocket that fits up to a 15.4″ laptop. Mesh side pocket holds your drink.

The RoxBox Bluetooth Speaker turns any mobile device into a sound machine. The built in mic comes in handy for a conference call on the go. Love this edgy speaker!

The Techie Headphones feature a sleek design and a fold up feature which makes it easy to travel with. With Beats by Dr. Dre being a hot item this holiday, we’re seeing lots of headphones in 2013.

Trending Now: Trend #2 New Sophistication

One of the major tones in promotional products for 2013 revolved around a refined, classic and streamlined style. A generous sampling of both apparel and hardgoods were blessed with chic design. When I mention the buzzwords “New Sophistication,” I envision the colors black, platinum and gold. I think of old Hollywood glamour- Rita Hayworth, Lauren Bacall and Elizabeth Taylor. “New Sophistication” also lends itself to the handsome sensibilities of Clark Gable and Paul Newman.

How does the trend carry over to promotional products? Think chrome finished writing implements, sleek black tablet cases, rhinestone accented sunglasses, brushed silver desk accessories or a tastefully blinged out tumbler. The looks are polished and professional- leaving a perfect impression to the end user.

Here are a few of the products that define “New Sophistication” to me.

Rutherford Blazer. Available in black and navy.

20 oz. Spirit Ice Tumbler with straw.

Ogio Pearl Polo

Callaway Chamberlain Ballpoint Pen

Brookstone Women’s Amenity Case

Palmdale Polarized Sunglasses

Check our pinboard on this trending topic too. If you would like more info on this 2013 trend, please give us a call!

I hope the products above inspire you.

Trending Now: Trend #1 Neo Retro

A big part of the Merchandising Team’s job at Pinnacle is spotting trends and finding products and apparel that resonate with our clients and the end-users. We do this by subscribing to trend reports, following retail trends, and keeping a keen eye when we’re out in public and at events. Each year, Pinnacle sends a team to the PPAI Expo to focus a few days entirely to uncovering the latest products, apparel, and trends specifically in the promotional products industry. When we came back we reported to the entire Pinnacle family on the 6 major trends we were seeing.

Trend #1: Neo Retro – a throwback to yesteryear with iconic objects, saturated colors, and synthetic materials. We’re seeing lots of turquoise, coral, and mint.  Here are some easy ways to incorporate this trend into your promotional products and branded apparel purchases this year.

Vintage Weekender Bag in turquoise, made with retro vinyl material

Ella Neoprene Cooler has a sleek, retro shape and fun flower detailing

Men’s 7.5 oz. La Brea Piped Jacket is a more stylized track jacket with retro inspiration
