Americans Try to Evacuate Cairo, Egypt (Rolling Bags in Hand)

Welcome to this week’s edition of “Trending Topic Tuesday,” where we share our take on what’s going on in the world and what promotional products would appropriately (or inappropriately) market the subject matter.

Today, February 1, marks day eight of the protests in Egypt and demonstrators are more determined than ever to remove President Hosni Mubarak from his 30 year reign. The events in Egypt started on January 25, following a similar revolt in Tunisia that forced the country’s leader into exile. Like Tunisia, Egypt’s economy is suffering, with many young, educated citizens unable to find job opportunities and forced to work abroad. In addition to high unemployment rates and a growing population, Egyptians have been living under a “state of emergency” during Mubarak’s 30 year rule, which has severely limited personal rights and political freedom. Mubarak has not yet agreed to step down, but has named others to the government, including Omar Suleiman, who is known as the head of the secret police force. Naming Suleiman as vice president as not gone over well with the Egyptian public, many of whom still continue to gather in Tahrir Square. As United States citizens watch anxiously to see what will happen with Egypt, a U.S. Ally, many of those currently visiting or living in Egypt are packing their rolling bags and trying to return home. The United States sent nine charter flights to Cairo yesterday, and has so far evacuated an estimated 1200 citizens.

The ‘Trenta’ cup size is set to debut in the US, rolling out in 14 states today, January 18, and expected to be available in all retail stores by May 3. With a 31-fluid ounce capacity, the Trenta promotional disposable cup provides 7 extra ounces of beverage consumption than Starbucks’ former largest size, the Venti – though currently it will only be available for iced coffee, iced tea and lemonade drinks.

NFL Playoff Picture: 49ers, Maybe; Promotional Koozies, Definitely.

Welcome to this week’s edition of  “Trending Topic Tuesday,” where we share our take on what’s going on in the world and what promotional products would appropriately (or inappropriately) market the subject matter.

Despite their loss this week to the San Diego Chargers (which put their record at 5-9 for the year), the San Francisco 49ers remain in playoff contention and could in fact still win their division. Currently, the St. Louis Rams lead the NFC West with a record of 6-8, while the 49ers are in third behind the Seattle Seahawks. Sportscasters and football fans alike have lamented the state of this particular division since early in the season.

But even if your team won’t be bound for the playoffs come January, you can still enjoy the end-of-season competition as Super Bowl XLV draws nearer from the comfort of your living room with a bowl of chips and a promotional koozie to keep your beverage of choice cold until halftime and beyond.

Shake the Magic Answer Ball: Will Tax Cuts Continue?

Welcome to this week’s edition of  “Trending Topic Tuesday,” where we share our take on what’s going on in the world and what promotional products would appropriately (or inappropriately) market the subject matter.

greeblieAs tax cuts from the Bush era are set to expire at the end of the year, a heated debate has developed on capital hill.

The bill, as it now stands, would extend tax cuts from the Bush era for 2 additional years, continue funding unemployment benefits for another 13 months, and enact a one year payroll tax reduction. Another confrontational factor, the estate tax, which would add $893 billion to the federal debt over the next five years.

Reinstating these cuts would mean about 150 million Americans would not see their taxes increase in 2011, but many are concerned that reinstating these terms will strangle the economy and the national deficit even further. On Monday, it was said the senate will open this unhinged debate.

President Obama is in the hot seat with both parties, and people and politicians are confused about where he stands. After insisting that tax cuts for the upper class were “irresponsible,” reinstating these cuts for 2011 will promote them.

As of right now, all that Obama says he wants to do is put the right laws in place to make the recovery stronger. However, even economists are unsure of which method will work. Now that everything has been turned on its head, no one knows what to expect. All that we can do now, is advise the magic answer ball.

Promotional Name Badges – “Hello, My Name is Captain Awesome”

Welcome to this week’s edition of “Trending Topic Tuesday,” where we share our take on what’s going on in the world and what promotional products would appropriately (or inappropriately) market the subject matter.

A man formerly known as Douglas Allen Smith, Jr. has legally changed his name to Captain Awesome, inspired by the nickname of a character on the NBC television Chuck. Awesome, 27, of Eugene, Oregon, was forced to go before a judge to receive approval for the formal name change upon swearing that this conversion was not for fraudulent reasons.

Awesome happens to be currently unemployed, which is fortunate for whatever employer would have had to explain the request for a new promotional name badge with the unique inscription on front – which wouldn’t even be Captain Awesome.
