Julia Child passed away in 2004, but if she was still alive, today would have been her 100th birthday. I’ll admit, most of my Julia Child knowledge comes from the movie Julie and Julia but I think most people are at least a little bit familiar with the woman who taught French cooking to America (even if it was from a movie that came out over 40 years later).

Some people have a lucky rabbit’s foot, some people have lucky charms, US Gynmast Dannell Leyva has a lucky towel. And that lucky towel helped him to win a bronze medal in the Men’s Gymnastics All-Around competition. Well, that and being a really good gymnast.

People remember where they were when big events occurred. I know where I was when I learned that Princess Diana died (in my friends car, a day or two before I went to college for my senior year), I know where I was when 9/11 happened (in DC at work, scary!) and I even remember where I was on August 9, 1995. I was in London visiting a friend and we heard the sad news of Jerry Garcia’s passing.

There’s something great about years ending in an even number. No, it’s not because I have some form of OCD; it’s because those years are Olympic years! Though it’s still a month away, I have to say, I’m pretty excited about the London Olympics.
This is me as a mascot. It kind of looks like me, if I was blue and had one eye. Oh and if I played tennis. The tennis part might be more of a stretch than anything, really.

Last week I read an NPR article about how Starbucks is supporting an Ohio-based mug maker, American Mug and Stein instead of purchasing their mugs overseas. It really made me happy to hear that a company of Starbucks’ stature is buying USA made promotional items and making a huge difference to a small town pottery business and the city of East Liverpool, Ohio.
American Mug and Stein was on the verge of shutting down, when unexpectedly they received their largest order to date from Starbucks.

After what seemed like much longer than nine months, Jessica Simpson and her fiance Eric Johnson had their baby – a 9 lb. daughter named Maxwell Drew. While not the most traditional name for a baby girl, Maxwell is named after relatives on both side of the family. Her first name is Johnson’s middle name as well as his mother’s maiden name and her middle name is Simpson’s mother’s maiden name.

Who else tuned in for the 11 o’clock lottery drawing last Friday, hoping to match the winning numbers and instantly be entitled to millions upon millions of dollars?
With Friday’s Mega Millions jackpot totaling a record-breaking $640 million dollars, three lucky individuals holding winning tickets were not the only ones to wake up richer on Saturday morning. Along with several people who matched some, but not all, of the winning numbers, lottery retailers, state governments, and local news stations, profited from heightened ticket sales and increased publicity. According to reliable news sources, approximately 50% of Mega Millions sales are funneled back into prize payouts, while 35% land up in state coffers, and 15% finds itself in the hands of retailers who are responsible for ticket sales and lottery operating costs.

Beginning January 1st of this year, residents and shoppers of Montgomery County, Maryland (a suburb of Washington, DC and where I grew up), are probably going to start using more reusable grocery bags and fewer plastic ones.

Yesterday was the 6th birthday of Twitter. Hard to believe that it’s been six years since founder Jack Dorsey sent out the first tweet ever, “just setting up my twttr.”
