Fan of the Month – Mining Resources & Mesabi Nugget

We are happy to introduce you to our Fan of the Month for March: Mining Resrouces & Mesabi Nugget! They are sister companies on the Iron Range, both under Steel Dynamics.

Mining Resources

Mesabi Nugget

1.  Tell us a little more about your company:

Steel Dynamics and Magnetation have partnered to build the new Mining Resources facility near Hibbing, Minnesota to process natural ore tailings basins and produce iron ore concentrate. The plant implements new magnetic separation technology to recover hematite ore from previously discarded waste streams generated by mining operations from the 1930s through the 1960s. New technology employed by the Mesabi Nugget operation now produces the world’s first and only iron nuggets that are pure enough to supplant imported pig iron in mini-mill steel production. Mesabi Nugget uses Minnesota iron ore to produce 97-percent pure, metallic iron nuggets that are perfectly suited for use in EAFs—ushering in a New Age of Iron for Minnesota’s Iron Range.

2.  What is your favorite promotional product?

Our favorite promotional item that we have ordered so far are the Eyeglass/sunglass Holder Clips.

3. What kind of promotional products would you like to use in the future?

One promotional item that we would like to see and couldn’t find on your website was a magnetic post it note pad. (ed note: Your Account Manager will be happy to send you some options for this. There are many products that we can get that are not on our site. Just ask!)

4.  Tell us a fun fact about you or your company!

Some of our crew participated in the Arctic Splash (jumped into a frozen lake) to raise funds for the United Way.

Thanks for working with Pinnacle.  We appreciate your business!  Look out for some fun goodies in the mail.

It’s SXSW Time!

SXSW (South by Southwest) is a conference and festival in Austin, Texas that is being held March 8-17th.  It’s huge conference filled emerging talent and new products, in the fields of technology, music and films.

People from all over the country who are involved in these industries flock to Austin each spring to check it all out.  There are over 5,000 separate events going on during the nine day period.  From all sorts of live music to film screenings to technology, marketing and social media sessions, SXSW clearly is the place to be for those in the know (or those who aspire to be).

There are informative sessions in entrepreneurialism and business, culture and entertainment, design and development, community and activism, work and career, gaming and game development, science and space exploration, content and distribution and more.

Aside from all the awesome opportunities that SXSW-goers have, they also receive A LOT of promotional products.

SXSW Swag

Mashable asked it’s followers to tweet pictures of the best SXSW swag they received with the hashtag #mashSXSW.

I encourage you to do a twitter search for that hashtag and check out some of the cool promotional products that other companies are using to promote their brand at this huge event. Maybe you’ll see something that you can use for your next event.

Promotional t-shirts for a Color Run

I’m a runner, not a fast runner, but a runner none the less.  I’d say that I do about 5-10 races of varying distances each year.  I’m sort of competitive when I race.  While there’s no way that I’m ever going to win the race or anything even remotely close to that, I do like to beat my previous times.  That said, sometimes there are races that aren’t meant to be run for PRs.  They are just meant to be run for fun.  Have you heard of the newest trend in fun runs?  It’s a color run!

From my research, I gathered that the concept of a color run was first introduced by The Color Run™  in January of 2012 and the idea has soared in popularity ever since.  The blasts of color feel somewhat like powdered sugar and while they sort of wash off, I wouldn’t suggest wearing your Sunday best while running in one of these.  Fortunately, most races provide a white t-shirt for you to wear.

Emory University recently held a color run as part of their Think Pink Week.  Proceeds from the race benefitted the Winship Cancer Institution.  Participants were encouraged to wear their white Think Pink Week promotional t-shirts and they were doused with pink powder as they crossed the finish line.

Have you ever done a color run?  Tell us about it in the comments!

Bake a cake in that promotional mug!

Chances are that you’ve received (or purchased) a promotional coffee mug in your lifetime. And while mugs are traditionally thought of as vessels for hot beverages like tea or coffee, there’s a bunch of other things you can do with your ceramic mugs including one of my favorites: bake a cake.

I don’t know about you, but I like single servings of things.  Put an entire cake in front of me and I’ll probably eat it all.  But bake a cake in a mug and boom: automatic portion control.

(Can we talk about how excited I was to find a picture of a mug cake that’s actually in a promotional mug? It’s the little things.)

I was inspired to write this post by an article that I saw in Buzzfeed about snacks you can cook in a mug.  Then I went onto Pinterest just to see what mug cakes I could find and, unsurprisingly, there are boards upon boards dedicated to recipes of cakes you can make in mugs.

There are tons of decadent desserts but one that really stuck out to me was this 100 calorie 2 minute mug cake.  I have all the ingredients at home and you bet that I’m going home tonight and baking up (nuking up?) one of these tonight.  I’ll report back.

It’s National Margarita Day

So it’s rainy and gross here in Atlanta (and snowy and gross in other parts of the country), and really that’s the perfect weather to celebrate National Margarita Day!  I mean, you might not be on a tropical resort with a drink in hand, but there’s no reason why you can’t fill up your favorite glass with a cold beverage and pretend, right?

Margarita

I’m going to let you in on a secret: despite having a fun time writing this post, I don’t really like margaritas. I prefer a glass of wine, really. On the rare occasion when I decide to indulge in a margarita (like today after work to celebrate this holiday, perhaps), I have to admit, I don’t know the difference between the different types that are offered on restaurant menus. Sure, I know that on the rocks is with ice and frozen is blended, but my knowledge of margaritas only goes that far. Texas margarita? What the heck is that?

So, for those of you who share my margarita naivety, I did a little research for you.  A traditional margarita is comprised of three ingredients – tequila, triple sec and lime juice.  Triple sec is used as the sweetener, but you could also use agave nectar, Cointreau or Grand Marnier.  A lot of bartenders use sour mix as well.  Salt is typically put around the rim of the glass.  The contrast of the salt with the sweetness of the liquid enhances the flavor and the experience.

And a Texas Margarita?  It has orange juice in it.
